Travelling with Pets
Regulations regarding the carriage of animals are complex and vary from country to country and airline to airline. You are advised to contact the authorities in the destination country, as well as seek advice from your airline or a specialist pet travel agency before planning your journey.
Airlines will only carry animals if advanced arrangements have been made, as space is often limited. There are two transport options (accompanied baggage or air cargo) and your airline will be able to tell you which services they are able to offer and the charges involved.
Taking pets out of the UK
You must comply with the requirements of the destination country. The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) operates an export helpline on +44 (0)20 7904 6347 or Fax +44 (0)20 7904 6395.
Pets arriving into the UK
Except for dogs, cats and ferrets from specific countries that comply with the requirements of the Pet Travel Scheme, all pets will be required to undergo a period of quarantine. Arrangements must be made and confirmed before the journey commences.
Pet Travel Scheme (PETS)
Dogs, cats and ferrets are now able to travel from a number of countries to the UK without the need to undergo six months quarantine provided they meet certain requirements. These requirements vary depending on the country or territory the pet is travelling from. Only carriers approved by Defra may carry animals into the UK on specific routes.
To be considered for entry under the Pet Travel Scheme, a pet will have to meet conditions as set out by Defra and must be carried in a suitable container – speak to your airline about how to prepare your pet for transport.
Guide and hearing dogs qualify for the scheme and must meet the same requirements. Some airlines permit them to travel in the cabin.

There is no official meeting point but if you’re waiting for a flight there are plenty of seats in the main airport concourse close to the arrivals hall exit.

There are cash machines before and after security (in arrivals and departures). Some machines dispense euros as well as UK currency. Cash machines are located as follows:
Before security: On the main concourse next to Travelex currency exchange and next to the help point.
After security: Next to WDF (World Duty Free) on the lower level of the departure lounge.
Due to Covid-19, our International Currency Exchange (ICE) stores are temporarily closed.
Baggage can be left in the terminal for £10.00 per bag / per day and you’ll have peace of mind that your belongings will be held securely until you collect them. Some restrictions apply. For further details, please visit the left luggage desk in the main terminal (before security by the check-in desks). Please note that due to security reasons there are no lockers for storing your luggage. This service is subject to operational capacity.
If you lose items whilst you are at the airport, please go to the lost property desk by the check-in area. If you discover you have lost items once you have left the airport please contact us by clicking this link (lost property enquiries will be responded to within 24 hours).

Please be advised that a £5.00 service and storage charge per item is applicable for items not collected from the lost property desk on the same day that they were handed in.

Southampton Airport has one of the closest train-to-plane connections in Europe, with Southampton Airport (Parkway) railway station just 99 steps from the terminal. Turn left at the main exit and you’ll see the station directly ahead of you.

Pick-up and Drop-off
Priority pick-up and drop-off is available just one minute walk from the main terminal in the short stay car park. Passengers who choose this option will be charged a £2 fee for 15 minutes. Free pick-up and drop-off area at Southampton Airport is situated in the long stay car park and offers 30 minutes of parking for free. Passengers can catch the airport shuttle bus down to the main terminal which takes around 3-5 minutes and runs every 10-12 minutes. Find out more.
There are four car parking options at Southampton Airport – Meet and Greet, Priority Parking, Short Stay Parking and Long Stay Parking. All options may be pre-booked and all give easy access to the terminal. Choose Priority Parking for the closest possible access to the terminal, wider bays and guaranteed ground-floor, undercover parking.

Other Services and Facilities
In line with UK law, smoking is not permitted inside the airport buildings. There is a designated smoking area outside the terminal, on the central forecourt. However, you will not be able to smoke once you have passed through security control into the departure lounge.
The use of electronic cigarettes is not permitted within the Terminal Building or travelling to or from aircraft (walking or by bus). Customers are permitted to use electronic cigarettes outside of the terminal building before security only.
There are payphones throughout the airport, before and after security. Most phones accept UK coins or major credit cards.
Free baggage trolleys are provided in key areas around the terminal building – in the car park, terminal forecourt, check-in area and baggage reclaim hall. Please help yourself if you need one.
