A record breaking 1,500 runners hit the tarmac at Southampton Airport for a 5.30am 5km fun run.

On Sunday 20 July, crowds of people from across the region watched the sunrise as they lined up along the runway of the local international airport.

So far, £80,000 has been raised through ticket sales and donations – enough to fund more than 20 life-saving missions for the air ambulance charity.

Gavin Williams, Managing Director of Southampton Airport, said:  “We are delighted with how the returning Runway Run turned out.

“Watching 1,500 people take to the runway at sunrise to support such an incredible cause was something really special with a fantastic amount raised.

“Our airport is proudly supporting the relocation to the community it serves, and the life-saving service the charity provides impacts so many people in the region.”

Keith Wilson, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Director of Income and Engagement, said:  “It was truly incredible and an absolute spectacle to witness 1,500 runners supporting their air ambulance at that time in the morning.

"We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who rolled out of bed at 4am and to our new neighbours at the Airport for welcoming us in and helping us save lives.”

Due to the overwhelming success of this year’s event, the Airport and air ambulance charity have already agreed to hold the event next year. The date will be announced soon.
