Alderney | Great Britain
Fly daily to Alderney with Aurigny.
This island may be small, but the diverse landscape is one of the most appealing aspects of this unspoiled getaway where animals, birds, insects and habitats flourish. If you love nature, you'll love it here and best of all, there are direct flights from Southampton Airport.
The island's first nature reserve, Longis, is rich in local wildlife and guided walks offer the best chance of learning about the flora and fauna.
Evidence of Neolithic man living on this island several thousands of years ago is all around. Roc á l'Epine, a burial chamber dating from 4,000 BC, can be found at Fort Tourgis while 200 Bronze Age artefacts were unearthed on Longis Common in 1832. The area is described as the ‘Old Town’ but is buried under shifting sands.
Alderney has the only working railway in the Channel Islands. It was officially opened in 1847 by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Its purpose was to carry stone from the eastern end of the island to build the breakwater and the Victorian forts. It's a great day out for families and train enthusiasts.
