Southampton Airport celebrates busiest summer on record

Southampton Airport has enjoyed a record breaking summer after almost 430,000 passengers travelled through its doors during July and August, representing an increase of 14.6% compared to the same period last year.

August proved to be the airport’s busiest month on record with 219,757 passengers whilst 207,631 passengers used the airport in July. Prior to this year, the airport’s busiest month had been in August 2007 when 205,500 passengers took to the skies.

This year alone Southampton Airport has welcomed four new airlines including KLM with worldwide flights via Amsterdam, bmi regional which launched a new service to Munich and Aer Lingus which launched direct flights to Cork. It was also the first airport in the UK to offer scheduled flights with European based airline, Volotea. Flybe alone announced five new routes from Southampton Airport including Biarritz, Lyon, Toulon, Paris Charles De Gaulle and Munich bringing the total number of routes served by Flybe from Southampton to 34.

Thomson has also announced it will introduce an Ibiza service for summer 2017 with some packages and flight only deals available.

Dave Lees, Managing Director at Southampton Airport, says ‘It has been a record summer here at Southampton Airport which is due to the amount of popular new flights and routes that we have secured this year. We hope to see this trend continue into 2017‘.
