Want to know more about what happens behind the scenes here at Southampton Airport? Jordan Peters, Security Officer shares a typical day in his job and some inside stories about airport operations.

1. What does your day to day job involve?

As a Security Officer my job involves greeting passengers, making sure that the people who fly out of Southampton and the staff that work there are kept safe. I do this by controlling access to the airports restricted areas, searching passengers/staff and bags to make sure no dangerous items are being taken airside, and monitoring the airport for any suspicious activity.

2. What is your favourite part of what you do?

Meeting the diverse amount of people who fly through Southampton and hearing about what travelling means for them. I also love working with my team as it makes coming to work more exciting.

3. What training did you have to go through before you could do this job?

I had to go through two tests that assessed my visual capability before I was allowed to interview. After that I had to learn all the rules and regulations that govern the aviation industry. I had to look at a lot of different possibilities when it comes to threats and the forms that they can take and how to deal with them appropriately.

4. What made you decide to want to work in aviation/at the airport?

I started working at the airport when I was 16 (I’m now 22) as a passenger service agent and honestly, to begin with, it was just to get a foot in the door of the working world, but since moving to security, every day is new and different and I feel like an integral part of the airport’s inner workings.

5. What do you love about working at SOU?

It is relatively calm compared to larger scale airports which means we can focus not only on Security but providing excellent customer service for our passengers as well.

7. Who is the most famous person you’ve met at SOU?

I’ve met a lot of famous people but I’d have to say the most famous in my eyes would have to be the Sugar Hill Gang on their way back from Glastonbury festival. Absolute legends!

8. If you weren’t working at the airport what would you do?

I’ve always wanted to be in a uniformed service such as the armed forces or fire service.

9. What is your favourite aircraft?

My favourite aircraft still has to be either the spitfires or Lancaster bombers which have both been revived to do anniversary shows and have both travelled through Southampton Airport at some point.

10. What is your favourite thing to do outside of work?

I love a good gym session and don’t shy away from sitting on my Xbox till the early hours of the morning, polar opposite activities but I enjoy them just as much as each other.
