Walk The Floor With... Gemma Young

Want to know what happens behind the scenes of your favourite airport? Gemma Young, Property Manager, shared with us a typical day in her job and some inside stories about airport operations.

What does your daily job involve?

My day to day job is massively varied which is why I love it!  I am responsible for the Airports Property portfolio which consists of buildings and land, both on and off site.  I manage Tenants and their accommodation that are leased from the Airport which can range from a leaky roof to building extensions.  My role includes activities such as Lease renewals, Rent Reviews, Move In/Move Outs and Strategic Commercial Planning and all aspects of Fire and Health and safety related to my properties.

What is your favourite part of what you do?

I take pride in being my tenant’s first point of contact and assisting with their queries along with being part of the Airports Crisis Management and Disruption Response Team as it keeps my hand in the operation.

How long have you been with Southampton Airport?

I know I don’t look old enough but 10.5 years….!

What training did you have to go through before you could do this job?

I have a strong background in the aviation and commercial industry so due to this experience, I have worked in various roles including Sales, Customer Service and Commercial.  I have recently qualified in Commercial Property with the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.

What made you decide to want to work in aviation/at the airport?

When I was 14, I carried out work experience at Going Places Travel Agents, working my way up to managing my own Store at aged 19.  I then wanted to see the other side of the holiday experience so started working at Bristol Airport at 22 and the rest is history…here I am today, still in the Travel Industry, it’s in my blood.

What do you like about working at Southampton Airport?

Southampton Airport as a great deal of potential and its run operationally and back of house by such enthusiastic staff whom make the Airport what it is, Easy, Fast and Friendly. There is a great sense of family with all SIAL staff and our Business Partners which you don’t get in the larger Airports.

What has been the highlight of your time working here?

I have been part of some major developments at Southampton and love seeing it grow.  My professional highlight is my recent qualifications in Commercial Property.

What is your favourite aircraft?

I am slightly embarrassed to say, that even after all the years of working in Airports…I have a massive fear of flying so I have to answer…none! Unless they are on the ground!

What is your favourite thing to do outside of work?

I love spending time with my family and friends in this fabulous weather having BBQ’s, water fights and going to the beach.  Going back to nature camping under the stars is my favourite kind of holiday.
