A lot of the time, you’ll go into store, pick up a bottle and smell the cap before instantly deciding
whether you like a fragrance or not. The problem with this technique is that all you are smelling is
the top note, and not any of the heart or base notes. And more importantly, you aren’t discovering
how the scent blends with your own skin.
1. Start with a scent blotter.
You’ll find scent blotters around the store near the fragrances, the paper is porous enough to
absorb the perfume and also give you an accurate idea of how the scent will smell. Two or three
quick sprays in a downward motion is how the pros do it. Then pass the scent strip through the cloud
of fragrance and bring it up to your nose. If you love the smell, the next step is to see how it smells
on your skin.
2. Spritz your wrist
If you love the scent on the blotter, the next step is to spray the scent onto your wrist. Spritz your
wrist with the scent and allow to dry, don’t rub your wrists as this will alter the scent. Leave this to
settle for 30 seconds, then bring your wrist to your nose to decide whether you like the scent.
3. Leave the scent to settle for 10 minutes
After deciding you love the scent on your wrist, the next step is to allow the scent to settle. Wait a
full 10 minutes, then smell your wrist again. By now the scent will have settled and you’ll get an
accurate idea of how the scent will smell on you day to day. Now you’ll know if you’ve found the
perfect scent for you!
