Last-minute getaways for grown-ups

You really do love children – your own and other people’s. But sometimes you need a well-deserved break without the kids and, preferably, no-one else’s little ones to disturb you. Yes, it’s time for the adults to have some fun on their own – be that with your loved one on a romantic break, with a group of friends or even as a solo traveller. There are plenty of options nowadays wherever you choose to go.

All the main tour operators offer packages at adult-only hotels so if you’re dreaming of a grown-up getaway that involves total relaxation combined with peace and quiet, there’s no shortage of inspiration. Romantic retreat in a sunshine paradise where you can leave your footprints in the sand? Tick. Culture-filled city break? Tick. Pool-based holiday with swim-up bar? Tick. Spa-based hotel with gym? Tick. Party central? Golf in the Algarve?

Yes, that’s another tick. And no kids in sight!

While some people would miss their kids too much to consider a holiday without them, others can’t get on the plane quick enough. The prospect of not having to constantly top up the sun cream and keep the little darlings entertained 24/7 is too attractive not to consider.

All you have to do is decide where to go – and here are some of our suggestions from Southampton Airport:

Jersey is a 30-minute flight from Southampton and with daily flights you can take a short break in the knowledge that you’re not going to be away from the kids for too long. It’s famous for its food so why not create your own foodie itinerary with not an “I don’t like that!” in sight.

The Costa Blanca perhaps doesn’t strike you as being top of the list for an adults-only holiday but there lots of hotels that have an over-16s policy and plenty of quieter resorts where you can enjoy sun, sand and sea without the kids, particularly if you go out with the peak seasons. What’s more, it’s just over two hours from Southampton Airport.
