City Breaks: A guide to Amsterdam

City Breaks: A guide to Amsterdam

You can reach Amsterdam in just an hour from Southampton Airport, so we asked local student blogger and 'dam fan Grace Roome for her guide to the city.

Wanting a destination full of lively nightlife, historical monuments, well-renowned museums, and beautiful architecture?  Well then search no more, Amsterdam is the place. Amsterdam is the most bike friendly city you will ever go to, and yes one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe.

While Amsterdam has a rather vibrant name to live up to it most certainly is not solely for stag dos and adult nightlife. Amsterdam doesn't disappoint that’s for sure.

When I share my love for Amsterdam it is very easy for people to roll their eyes and think they know why a student falls in love with the city….However, it has so much more to offer than legal cannabis and a raunchy red light district. It is true to say the Anne Frank museum is a must and of course it’s amazing for hopping on a bike, wandering along the canals and getting lost in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam does however, have more to offer, between the months of March-May go and take a trip to Keukenhof's flower garden. It features the Netherlands most multi-coloured, energetic famous tulips. It is something different to do and rather spectacular I’m sure you won’t see another tulip garden like this one!

Amsterdam is the home of Heineken beer, so why not take a tour around the Heineken factory or cycle to the well-known Vondelpark and stop to have Henineken and take in the attractive scenery. When I was in Amsterdam I would lose hours sat in Vondlepark riding around.

I love the way Amsterdam has trams that run all the way around the city, it just makes the ride around so much more enjoyable. It is a great way to hop on and off and see the most of the city.

Famous food in Amsterdam

There is no way you can go to Amsterdam and not have a stroopwaffle. A stroopwaffle is two deliciously sweet waffle, wafers with caramel "stroop" (aka syrup) in the middle. It would be rude not to try one! Delicious.

A top tip

Work out what kind of trip you plan to have in mind when heading to Amsterdam, I would recommend getting an iAmsterdam card as it includes free public transport, free admission into most museums (winner) and free canal cruise (even better!) there is no harm seeing if the iAmsterdam can save you money.
