Once the sea warms up by early summer, the beach bars and seaside tavernas on Skiáthos open, welcoming the seasonal visitors from June until September. With parts of Mamma Mia filmed here, Abba sum it up rather well… “My my, how can I resist you?”
Part of the Sporades archipelago, Skiáthos is just 42 square km and in the North West Aegean Sea. Ideal for families and couples of all ages, its appeal lies in around 60 glorious golden beaches.
In Skiáthos town, bars and restaurants spill onto the pavements along the old harbour and Papadiamanti Street, perfect of sampling local Greek specialties – honey, olives and homemade liqueurs – plus fresh fish and seafood. Eating out will be a memorable part of your holiday.
You will find the most popular beaches on the southern side of the island, including the famous bay of Koukounariés. From Skiáthos, you can take day trips to the other Sporades islands, Skopelos and Alonissos.
Transport from Skiáthos Airport
Car rental is available through firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com or
you can use a 24/7 metered taxi service, available outside the terminal building. The journey to
Skiáthos Town takes 10-15 minutes and costs €10-20.
Top things to see and do
Koukounariés in the south west is Skiáthos’ most famous beach. The entire area, including the lake inland from the pines, is a protected natural reserve, with no permanent development at sea level. You will find sun-beds and watersports on fine sand, lapped by clear water. It’s the last stop on the island’s main bus route, with limited parking. To the west, over the headland are the Banana beaches, Big and Little. On the south coast, two popular beaches are Agía Paraskeví and Vromólimnos. You may even see a wedding at the latter’s taverna.
Round-the-island boat cruises leave the old port daily from June until late September, following an anticlockwise circuit via sea caves and taking in the stunning white-stone Lalária beach – it’s the one with the famous Trýpia Pétra rock-arch, inaccessible by land. Boat excursions continue to Kástro and Tsougriá for swimming, making a memorable family day. Trips on Eleni cost €20 per person.
There’s an open air cinema in Skiáthos Town at Papadiamantis Street, open during the tourist season and the most popular film is – unsurprisingly! – Mamma Mia! Spot the various locations… It caters for around 200 people, you will find a snack bar serving soft drinks, wine, beer and popcorn (of course), and movie-goers enjoy getting up to sing and dance! Participation is optional, a fun evening out.
Explore the older, hillier quarters above the old port, where you will find charming little plazas and gardened houses. The Galerie Varsakis antique shop, close to the waterfront, features Greek ethnic antiques, jewellery and handicrafts. In recent years owner Harris Varsakis has created a collection of beautiful paintings, reproduced using laser printing on canvas, others by silk print in a limited and numbered edition.
Off the beaten track
With excellent visibility, Skiáthos scuba diving operators cater for beginners through to advance divers as well as those who prefer to snorkel in the Aegean’s crystal clear waters.
Dolphin Diving at Tzaneriá beach operates from early May until late October. Get off at bus stop 12 and go straight down to the beach. Full equipment is provided, but divers who bring their own gear can store it during their stay. A five-dive package for qualified divers costs €215.
Kástro, meaning ‘castle’, is a natural fortress built in the 13th century and subsequently used by islanders as a refuge against pirate raids. Today, albeit a windswept ruin with just the original gatehouse and churches remaining, it lures visitors thanks to its breathtaking natural beauty. Meander along and take some fabulous photographs.
