Top things to see and do
The Bowes Museum boasts a renowned collection of fine and decorative art in the surroundings of a sumptuous French château. Highlights include paintings by El Greco, Francisco Goya, Canaletto, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and François Boucher, as well as early works by French glassmaker Émile Gallé. Watch the 18th-century Silver Swan automaton preen itself, and wander through the extensive collections of decorative art, costume displays, ceramics, textiles, and tapestries. A cafe offers both light meals and heartier fare, or you can picnic outdoors in the museum's verdant parkland. The surrounding woodlands, children's playground, and seasonal outdoor events complete the experience.
Roseberry Topping, a distinctive peak known as the “mini Matterhorn”, is a mere 30-minute drive south of Middlesbrough. From the top, there are wonderful views right across the heathery moorland. In and around the National Park, be sure to visit stunning Rievaulx Abbey and the Hole of Horcum – a huge natural amphitheater that is about a kilometre wide and 122m deep.
While in Teeside why not pay a visit to the Tees Transporter Bridge! This is a symbol of Middlesborough's industrial history and this 102 year old bridge is one of the oldest of its kind in the whole world! Situated over the river Tees, you can admire this bridge from afar or cross the bridge by foot or in a car.
