Managing corporate responsibility
Our approach to managing our business impacts responsibly is guided by our corporate responsibility policy and embedded in our business processes, both at Southampton Airport and through BAA. Each BAA airport has its own senior management governance structure to oversee delivery of corporate responsibility locally and best practice is shared amongst the airports.

Recommendations from ERM 2005/06
As a result of our Corporate Responsibility Report assurance 2005/06, Environment Resources Management Limited (ERM) recommended that Southampton Airport made the following improvements:
- Enhance processes for planning and resource allocation for sustainability targets to ensure higher levels of achievement particularly for waste recycling targets
- Enhance change management procedures to provide evidence of senior management decisions to modify targets and ensure clear communication of these changes to interested stakeholders.
Southampton Airport’s response
Southampton Airport has enhanced the processes for planning and resource allocation for sustainability targets, through the recruitment of a new environment and surface access manager. The role incorporates a variety of environmental themes, including monitoring and ensuring, along with the responsible departments, that environmental targets are on schedule. As a result, the airport has been able to ensure the higher levels of achievement as described in this 2006/07 report.
In addition, the airport has established a Sustainability Board, allowing all target owners and key staff to meet on a regular basis to monitor the airport’s progress on matters relating to sustainability. The Board is chaired by the Managing Director and used as a forum to set and challenge targets, monitor current progress and plan for the future. Members of the communications team also regularly attend this, and disseminate the information to key stakeholders accordingly.
