FAQs

What is SMS?

SMS stands for Short Messaging Service. It is software built into a mobile phone that enables text messages to be sent from one mobile device to another. These messages can be up to 160 characters in length (spaces count as a character).

What SMS services does BAA offer?

BAA has two easy-to-use services, Flying Messenger and Flying Messenger Plus.

Flying Messenger Plus

You tell us the flight you are interested in and we will automatically send you a confirmation alert and up to three* status alerts. For further information select Flying Messenger Plus from the left hand menu.

You can request flight information up to two weeks in advance. If you request a Flying Messenger Plus service inside the 12-hour window the second alert is sent immediately.

* The number of alerts your receive will depend on how close to scheduled take off/landing you request the service. You will only be charged for the alerts you receive.

How do I use the service?

Simply send your request to 82222, details on how to format your message can be found by selecting Flying Messenger or Flying Messenger Plus from the left-hand menu.

What do I need to use the service?

To use the SMS service you will need an SMS enabled mobile device. Virtually all mobile phones can send and receive SMS messages. If you're unsure whether or not your phone has this capability you should check its user guide, or contact your service provider.

How quickly do the messages arrive?

99% of all messages will arrive within one minute. Typically messages take 10–15 seconds to arrive.

How much do the services cost?

Flying Messenger (one alert) 25p plus standard network message rate (including VAT).

Flying Messenger Plus (up to four alerts) 75p plus standard network message rate (including VAT).

You are not charged for confirmation of service request messages (Flying Messenger Plus), PIN code delivery, "flight not found" or "service temporarily unavailable" messages.

How am I charged for the services?

Your charges will appear on your mobile phone bill, and payment will be collected via your network operator. If you're a pre-pay customer, your balance will be deducted by the network operator.

Where does the flight information come from?

The data comes from BAA's own flight information databases. It is the same data that feeds the customer flight information screens on view at the airport.

Can the services be used overseas?

BAA's services are designed for use within the UK. It may be possible to use them overseas, but you should check the call charges with your network operator before using the service – they may be expensive.

Can services be cancelled once ordered?

Once you have requested Flying Messenger or Flying Messenger Plus services they cannot be cancelled.

My phone is not receiving flight information alerts, yet I can send and receive normal text messages.

This effects pre-pay customers and can be caused when you run out of credit on your phone, then request a reverse-charge SMS service. In these circumstances your mobile phone service provider may bar your phone from receiving further reverse-charge alerts even if you have subsequently topped your phone up. The solution is to call your service provider to get your phone unbarred. Your phone will receive Flying Messenger alerts normally after this.

How can I contact BAA?

You can also call the flight information status line on +44 (0)844 481 7777 for recorded information on the SMS service (calls charged at the national rate).
