New check-in facilities help passengers to breeze through Southampton Airport

17 June 2008

Southampton Airport has invested over £3 million in new check-in and baggage facilities to help passengers to breeze through the airport. The developments have arrived for the start of the summer season at the airport, which welcomed 187,122 passengers during May, a 6.9% increase on the same month last year.

The new facilities include the installation of three additional check-in desks, and Flybe have installed a further 10 new self-service kiosks for the time-conscious traveller. Two of these kiosks are located in the short stay car park, allowing passengers to check-in with ease, whilst en route to the terminal building. These installations have nearly doubled the airports check-in facilities from the original 14 desks, to 27 check-in points. Additionally, passengers also have the option to check-in online in advance of their flight, to save time at the airport.

Behind the scenes, the airport has also invested in a major upgrade to the baggage systems. This upgrade now provides an improved service for passengers, by nearly doubling the number of bags that can be processed per hour, and incorporates the latest security technology.

Dave Lees, Director of Planning & Development at Southampton Airport, said: “The installation of 13 new check-in facilities will benefit the time-conscious passenger by providing additional choice for check-in. This, together with the baggage system developments, aim to ensure that passengers continue to experience the easy and fast service that Southampton Airport is known for.”
