Surface transport target 2007

Target Score

BAA Southampton will continue to focus on implementing the surface transport strategy to achieve 18.5% of passengers using public transport to access the airport by 2011.

ERM was not able to audit this target.

This target focuses on changes between 2006 – 2011 as part of the wider Surface Access Strategy. As there are no interim targets identified, ERM deemed this target as un-auditable. Despite this, a number of objectives in the strategy have already been delivered.

Two specific working groups have been established in addition to the Airport Transport Forum. This new approach involves operators, local councils and the airport, specifically working on implementing improvements and sharing ideas to progress the objectives of the strategy. Both the rail and bus and coach working groups have been very successful with clear Terms of Reference being agreed, as well as the production of a new “Travel Options” leaflet for passengers, which is regularly updated.

The leaflet incorporates the different modes of transport together with journey time, route information and operator contact details. It is available in the airport, and at a number of other key locations such as tourist information centres, local hotels and shopping centres. The content is also promoted in the terminal to make the information more visible and give passengers the facts to make an informed choice of travel.

Research has also taken place to evaluate the possibility of installing real-time train information in the main terminal. This will mean that arriving passengers have the latest travel information to make their journey as stress free and seamless as possible.

A new 10p parking levy was introduced to the short stay car park in 2007. This means that 10p is taken from every paid transaction in this car park, and used to fund sustainable transport initiatives.

In addition to the existing staff travel incentives offered at the airport, the existing Car Share Scheme has been boosted via a Car Share Promotion Day where staff were actively recruited to sign up to the scheme.  Members of the scheme are entitled to a number of discounts and offers with local companies when they join the scheme. In 2007 there were 137 members of the scheme (over 10% of the airport workforce).
