Energy targets 2007
| Target | Score |
|---|---|
| To reduce our direct impact on CO2 emissions by a further 2% against the business as usual forecast between Jan and Dec 2007. | Target bettered |
| To develop an energy strategy during 2007 to include the identification of potential future energy savings. | Target achieved |
We exceeded one of our 2007 targets, by achieving an actual reduction in CO2 emissions of 11% against the business as usual model (9% better than the target). This equates to around 339 tonnes being saved in CO2 emissions.
The energy used in 2007 was also substantially less than the amount used in 2006 and 2005, despite increases in the number of passengers using the airport, and a new car park development, which uses additional energy for lighting.
These savings were brought about largely through micro managing the building management system, which controls heating, ventilaton, cooling and hot water. Carefully managing this system means the use of energy and gas can be reduced. Additionally, there has been investment in new energy efficient equipment in the air handling units which control the airflow to the terminal.
Our engineering team also won a number of awards for developing LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting solutions, which produce better levels of lighting while using around 75% less electricity. The new lights can operate for up to 100,000 hours, or the equivalent of ten years of continuous usage. Some of these lights have already been installed around the airport, and investigative work is ongoing to see where else they can be utilised.
We also produced our energy strategy, which outlines a number of key themes and opportunities for managing energy use. An energy efficiency audit was undertaken by a specialist consultant, who identified a number of energy reduction opportunities at the airport. These have been combined with other elements such as raising staff awareness and improved energy governance to create the strategy and an annual work plan, which will be reviewed each year.
