Southampton Airport supports Eastleigh students

11 December 2007

Over 60 students from senior schools across Eastleigh have participated in the 2007 Eastleigh Borough Twinning Association Language Competition, supported by Southampton Airport.

Senior schools across the Borough of Eastleigh were invited to participate in the competition, which challenged students to present to a panel of judges and answer questions on an aspect of France, Germany or Spain in which they are interested, whilst speaking fluently in either French, German or Spanish.

This year’s competition, organised by the Eastleigh Borough Twinning Association and hosted by Wildern School, has been funded by the BAA Communities Trust, BAA’s own charity. Each student received a ‘Certificate of Participation’, and the top students in each category received prizes for first, second and third place.

Carole Sayles, Chairman of the Eastleigh Twinning Association, said: “The challenge is a fantastic event for students to develop language skills, which can be used around the world. We would like to thank the airport for their support in this year’s event.”

The Mayor of Eastleigh, Councillor Roger Smith, commented: “It is wonderful to see so many students speaking other languages fluently. The competition has really brought their classroom learning to life, and will be a good foundation for the world of work.”

Mark Gibb, Head of Airside Operations at Southampton Airport, said: “As an international business, Southampton Airport is delighted to be supporting the Eastleigh Borough Twinning Association Language Competition this year. Passengers can fly to 12 French cities, 4 Spanish and 3 German destinations from Southampton Airport, and we hope these talented students will continue to develop their language skills by visiting some of these places in the future.”
