The local economy
There are 30 different companies based on site, employing more than 1,200 people. During 2004, the Geodata Institute at Southampton University estimated that the airport contributes more than £86 million to the local economy each year. In addition, there are more than 90 south Hampshire companies supplying the airport with goods and services on a regular basis.
This year, we achieved the set target, and used local contractors for at least 25% of the total procurement portfolio value. In February 2007, we also joined forces with businesses from around the region to take part in the first ever ‘Meet the Buyers’ event in Hampshire, sourcing new and innovative local suppliers. The event saw more than 140 local suppliers meet with 20 regional and national companies to discuss business opportunities which generated local revenue for the region. The event was led by Eastleigh Borough Council, with sponsorship provided by Winchester City Council, Southern Entrepreneurs, Test Valley Borough Council and Business Link.
Inbound tourism
In 2007, we continued to work with a number of organisations to promote the region for inbound tourism. These organisations include Eastleigh Borough Council, Southampton City Council, Hampshire County Council, Winchester City Council, Portsmouth City Council and Tourism South East among others.
Cruise Partnership
The airport is also growing in popularity as the easiest way for passengers to join the many cruise ships based in the Port of Southampton. In November 2007, a new Cruise Partnership was launched onboard the QEII. The partnership includes representatives from the airport, Associated British Ports (ABP), and Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruise lines. The aim of the partnership is to improve the links between the airport and the port for cruise ship passengers, to make their journeys as smooth as possible.
