Brittany’s historic seat of political power is postcard perfect. Take a tour in the Grand Chamber for its magnificent interior decoration – all coffered ceilings, carved and gilt panels.
Found right in the centre of the city, the Thabor Botanical Gardens have 10 hectares to meander, from rose gardens to formal spaces.
Les Champs Libres Science Centre & Planetarium is a brilliant spot for some next-gen stargazing – kids will love the 3D shows in the Planetarium that bring the galaxy above to life.
Off the beaten track
Stuff of Arthurian legend, Brocéliande is the fabled forest of King Arthur just 18 miles from Rennes. Take a mystical journey through a fairytale chateau and find the Fountain of Youth.
Amazing chateaux aren’t just the preserve of the nearby Loire, there’s plenty to explore right on your doorstep. Not far from Rennes, is the pretty town of Châteaugiron.
Follow in the footsteps of post-Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin and head to the pretty village of Pont-Aven, where he liked to paint.
